Gabriel Custodio (1912 - 1993). Signed lower right and dated 12/56. Also signed on back of painting. Size is 18" high x 24" wide. Unframed. Original oil on canvas.
Custodio is an important 20th century Philippine artist - his paintings hang in the National Gallery of Manila and at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Taught by Fernando Amorsolo, Custodio became one of the 'Conservative Group' of artists in the Philippines, painting in an academic, traditional style. His work is also identified as 'Mabini Art' - a distinct mid-century genre and movement in Philippine painting. He won various art awards in the 1950s. He taught others who were to become master Filipino artists, including Navarro, Galvez and Dumlao.
In 1998, a Custodio painting (figures working in field) sold at Christie's/Singapore for $2,087 (U.S.) More recent sales include - $21,202 (landscape), $5,654 (landscape), and $15,926 (village scene). Gillain Bryce Fine Art Gallery has a Custodio painting currently listed for $8,500 (shoreline with boats), while Oceanside Antiques currently lists a Custodio painting (tropical street scene) for $23,000.
